Establishment of the Mino-Washi brand—the pinnacle of quality

The source of Mino washi (Japanese paper) paper is the bountiful nature of the Mino region (Gifu, Japan) and the limpid waters of its Nagara and Itadori rivers.
Its appeal comes from its soft and delicate texture, which is strong and durable, yet evenly thin. The highness of its quality has led to its use in a variety of traditional to everyday items such as sliding shoji doors and mounted paper works. In addition, it is even used in the restoration of cultural assets at the level of national treasure, such as ancient documents and pictures not only in Japan, but around the world. In order to further heighten the value of Mino washi paper, and to take the responsibility of expressing its quality both within Japan and abroad, this new brand was established. Strict quality criteria have been established, and only the products which have satisfied those criteria with their high quality are allowed to display the new Mino-Washi brand logo.

Mino-Washi is the pinnacle of quality, linking the days of the past and the days to come, linking Mino to the world.

Mino-Washi’s “M” as the new brand logo, made in resemblance of the rippling waves caused during the vertical and horizontal rocking when making paper

Mino washi paper is born of the beautiful flowing waters of the Nagara and Itadori rivers. Throughout a long 1,300-year history, the traditional techniques of antiquity are still upheld today. Mino washi paper is produced in its own method of rocking it vertically and horizontally during its creation. By adding movement not simply from front-to-back, but also from side-to-side slowly, the paper finishes as a uniformly strong washi paper longitudinally and laterally. The appearance of the ripping waves that occur while doing this were used as they resemble the letter M.
This shape can also be associated with lush, green mountains. Also, overlapping the “M” with Chinese character “人” (meaning “person”), and changing its color so it can be recognized, the delicate beauty of Mino washi paper from its intertwining fibers can be felt.
The ideas embodied by the “M” shape are connected to the importance of the history and tradition around Mino washi paper as well as its depth.

“Shikkoku” (Jet black)

When all colors are mixed together, they create the color black. This is a fulfilling color as it is made through the addition of all other colors. This is a collective description of the three types of Mino washi paper: Hon-minoshi, Mino Tesuki-washi, and Mino Kikaisuki-washi.

This brand logo is certified by the Minowashi Brand Cooperative Society. This logo guarantees that the product is high-quality Mino washi paper, satisfying the Minowashi Brand Cooperative Society’s own criteria.
